تعتبر مخلفات النخيل والتمور في الدول المنتجة لمحصول التمور عبئا كبيراً على المزارع ومصانع تعليب التمور ، مما شكل تلوث بيئي ظاهر من أثر تراكم مخلفات أشجار النخيل من الجريد والسعف والجذوع البالية ،  ومخلفات مصانع تعليب التمور من نوى وتمور مصابة أو مشوهة لا تصلح للتعليب والتسويق ، مما دعت الحاجة إلى إيجاد بدائل لإنشاء مشاريع تحويلية لتلك المخلفات ، لاستخدامها كعلف غني جدا بالألياف والسكريات.

ومن خلال إجراء مسح لبعض مزارع اشجار النخيل ، تبين بأن النخلة الواحدة تطرح ما معدله 23 كجم من المخلفات سنويا ، وهذا يشير إلى الحجم الهائل من تلك المخلفات الغير مستفاد منها والتي تشكل مشكلة بيئية حقيقية في الدول المنتجة لمحصول التمور.
